Let this be very clear that if the purpose of the whole exercise is to make money in a foreign land than Linköping would be your last choice. I have yet to come across a tree in Linköping where I could gather Crowns from. No doubt some individuals who have worked very hard (and when I say ‘very’ I want to stress fully on the word that it is indeed very hard to make money) to make money and study together. But those individuals have never bothered about the nature of job or how much was the pay from that work etc. You need to go round searching for working and knocking from door to door asking people if they need someone to help them with something.
This is of course the crudest form of way of looking for work. Another more organized manner could be that you make a resume (preferably in Swedish) and drop it in hotels, shops etc and hope that they call you or hire you. Like someone who has made some money here would say to me “Its about how you market yourself”.
Paper Job
In Linköping city there is only one paper distribution company which distributes its own papers and all the other papers as well. The name of the company is Corren and one name that you will continue to come across if you would want to look for a paper job is “Roland”. This name you will not forget and all those who are doing jobs or have done paper jobs remember Roland in some way or the other. The Paper job is good for summer but in Winter waking up at 2:30 or 3 AM in the morning with extreme snow outside maybe even a -10° C and getting ready and going to deliver papers is not one of the best things to do in life. But like a friend of mine says “It depends on what and how much you are in need of the money for which you are doing this”. It’s a simple formula if need for money will exceed the toughness of the job than it is doable. To get a paper job in itself is also not an easy job. Rather I would say that getting a Corren job is a job in itself. With a full time job one can earn about SEK 4000 / month.
Stora Torget
Stora Torget is a place in every city where a big market is setup. Something like a JUMMA BAZAR or big bazaar. Mostly the Pakistani’s involved in this are selling clothes on 6 metre or varying up to 21 metre long shops. The job goes something like this. You wake up in the morning and drive (also note you need an International driver license) with a helper to some city and reach the Stora Torget of that city. There you take out metal rods and tents and setup the shop. Than you put the clothes on display and afterwards people will come and buy clothes. For this also it is preferable that you know Swedish since you have to deal with clients. Than at the end of the day you pack up the clothes, put them back in the truck and come back. Normally the base of this work is in Jonköping so if you are in Linköping than it is not recommended – specially for high load course work. Also you have to live in Jonköping. The nature of the work gets easy in the Summer but in Winters in extreme weather working out in the open and setting up the shop in snow and wind is quite a difficult task. Afterwards also standing outside in the open for the whole day in extreme cold is not an easy job. Normally for such a work you get paid 300 SEK but there is no insurance for you and if anything goes wrong you are on your own.
Reklam Distribution
On every Sunday there is a Reklam paper (Advertisements) that is distributed by another company in Linköping. It’s only to be done on Sunday. In that you get a bunch of papers on any given location which you tell the company (it can be your own apartment as well) and there you set and organize the papers. Afterwards you load the paper on to a cart provided by the company and distribute it in a district. If you do a single district you can earn almost around 400 SEK / work day. It takes about 3-4 hours to deliver the Advertisements.
Odd Jobs
Other than this there are lot of odd jobs which can be acquired depending upon your own temperament and will. For example I earned some money by fixing bikes in the start and well it didn’t kind of support me or anything but atleast it enabled me to buy all the tools for my cycle repair which I needed badly because somehow because of lack of knowledge I bought a bike which gave me a lot of troubles.
AMS.SE
This is a website which will also give you some idea about what kind of jobs are available and you can explore it. The site ofcourse is in Swedish but you can use the following link http://lexin.nada.kth.se/swe-eng.shtml to get the translation word by word or try www.systran.net There is of course another perspective to this and that is that you can reduce your cost of living and hence will not feel the need to look for a job immediately.
